Joan Meister
About Philia > Sources of Inspiration > Joan Meister

Courageous. Outspoken. Visionary. Spiritual. Joan Meister embodied all of these qualities. A force within the disability rights movement, Meister co-founded DisAbled Women's Network (DAWN) Canada, a national cross-disability organization with a distinctly feminist character. Joan was also Co-Chair of the Board of the BC Centre of Excellence for Women's Health, President of ORW: Opportunities through Rehabilitation and Work Society, and Chair of the Society for Disability Arts and Culture.

Joan passed away peacefully on January 10, 2004 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Though she is gone, her rich and vibrant legacy lives on in all those who were touched by her. Her impact on the many organizations with which she was involved was significant, and she has truly made the world a better place for people with disabilities. Joan was a genuinely inspiring person and will be much missed. Read a tribute to Joan on Dawn's Website.
